Bridgeport Hospital’s expertise in heart valve procedures is reflected through Transcatheter Valve Certification by the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Yale New Haven Health Heart and Vascular Center is the first and only healthcare system in Connecticut to be certified by the ACC for transcatheter valve replacement procedures, also offered at Yale New Haven Hospital. Certification is based on established national clinical measures to support clinical decisions and links process improvement to patient outcomes.
At Bridgeport Hospital, patients with severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic heart valve) are evaluated for a valve replacement procedure called transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that typically offers a shorter recovery time than traditional surgery.
The TAVR procedure involves using a catheter from the leg or other approach to deliver a new aortic valve that replaces the heart’s diseased aortic valve without requiring open-heart surgery. TAVR is a potential treatment for all patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. The valve team offers the Edwards SAPIEN 3™ valve and the Medtronic Evolut™ PRO valve. Watch the videos below for more detail about TAVR.
The heart valve team includes interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons from Bridgeport and Yale New Haven hospitals as well as echocardiographers and coordinators, and reflects the commitment of the Yale New Haven Health System to deliver top quality care throughout the state.
If your doctor has told you that you have severe aortic stenosis, TAVR may be a viable treatment option. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 203-384-3844.
This short video animates the steps taken during the transfemoral procedure for TAVR.
Patients needing advanced heart and vascular procedures at Bridgeport Hospital can benefit from one of the area’s leading-edge hybrid operating facilities, the Elizabeth M. Pfriem Hybrid Operating Room (OR).
