Yale New Haven Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit ranked fourth in Northeast by Newsweek

Friday, September 22, 2023

MILFORD, CT (Sept. 22, 2023) – The Yale New Haven Hospital Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU), located at the Milford Campus of Bridgeport Hospital, has been recognized as a top Physical Rehabilitation Center by Newsweek. The Milford IRU was ranked in the top 50 in the United States and fourth in the Northeast.

“Each year millions of Americans are prescribed physical therapy while recovering from surgery, treating chronic conditions or healing from illnesses or injuries,” says Brooke Spadaccino, MSN, RN, CNML; vice president, Orthopedic Services. “Inpatient physical rehabilitation facilities are often used for patients recuperating from the most severe illnesses or injuries. These centers provide intensive therapy with multidisciplinary teams of medical professionals.”

Research shows that physical therapy following surgery reduces recovery time. Additionally, patients treated with physical therapy experience reduced pain and improved mobility, which results in better function.

There are more than 1,000 inpatient physical rehabilitation centers in the United States. Newsweek recognizes 280 as America's Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers based on a survey of experts, quality metrics and accreditation data. Survey participants were also given an opportunity to specify standout programs in areas like rehabilitation for amputation, brain injury, cancer, spinal cord injury or stroke.

The Milford Campus IRU was created in 2015 with the consolidation of IRUs at Bridgeport and Yale New Haven hospitals. The Milford Campus became part of Bridgeport Hospital in 2019.

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is a non-profit 501-bed acute care hospital with two campuses (plus 42 beds licensed to Yale New Haven Children's Hospital). Its Bridgeport and Milford Campuses serve patients from across the region. The hospital admits more than 23,000 patients and provides nearly 350,000 outpatient treatments annually. The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn center in the state and one of only 64 verified burn centers in the United States. Bridgeport Hospital is committed to providing safe, compassionate and cost efficient care to its patients and the community. www.bridgeporthospital.org
