BRIDGEPORT, CT – Edward Pinto, MD, of Westport, was recognized as Physician of the Year during Bridgeport Hospital's April 20 Physician Leadership Summit at the Fairfield Museum and History Center.

"Dr Pinto is a hospital icon," Chief Medical Officer Michael Ivy, MD, said in presenting the award. "He represents what we all aspire to be – a superb clinician who has a great bedside manner with his patients, colleagues and peers."

Dr. Pinto, a cardiologist and internal medicine physician, was cited for his outstanding patient satisfaction performance, which includes being the physician leader in inspiring philanthropic giving to the hospital through the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation Honor Your Caregiver Program.

Dr. Pinto attended St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India, and served his residency at Bridgeport Hospital. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and at Pennsylvania State University's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

"I've been practicing medicine for over 39 years," said Dr. Pinto. "It has been rewarding and challenging – and I would do it all over again!"

Dr. Pinto is part of a family of physicians. His wife, Marguerite Pinto, MD, is a Bridgeport Hospital pathologist. Their daughter, Michelle Kittleson, MD, is a transplant cardiologist and director of heart failure research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Pinto's late brother, Arthur Pinto, MD, was chief of Urology at Bridgeport Hospital.

Dr. Pinto says the focus of his practice is to promote wellness and preventive care, and moderate risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. He says what he enjoys most about his work is getting to know his patients and their families and making a difference in their lives.

"I try to comfort the sick and frightened, and I try to be kind to the very ill and old," he says. "I want to be part of someone's memory forever – which is only possible with the support of my great office staff and the excellent doctors, staff and facilities at Bridgeport Hospital."
