Interlibrary Loan

The purpose of interlibrary loan (ILL) is to obtain, upon request of a library user, material not available in the user's local library. "Interlibrary loan is intended to complement rather than to substitute for good library collections built and managed to meet the routine needs of local library users. ILL is based on a tradition of sharing resources between various types and sizes of libraries and the belief that no library, regardless of its size or budget, is completely self-sufficient" (Interlibrary Loan Code of the United States,2016).

  • ILL services are provided to all Yale New Haven Health Bridgeport Hospital staff and affiliates free of charge.
  • Requests are processed and filled on the same day (excluding weekends and holidays)
    • Rush services are available with a quicker than average turnaround time. Contact the Medical Library (ext. 3254) for assistance with rush requests.
  • Copyright law forbids the library from obtaining an entire issue of a journal through interlibrary loan.

The requesting library is responsible for complying with U.S. copyright law (Title 17, USC), in particular, the provisions of sections 107 (Fair use) and 108 (Reproduction by libraries and archives).
