Every year, as part of our vital mission to promote health and wellness throughout the Greater Bridgeport region, Bridgeport Hospital (BH), sponsors, develops and participates in a wide variety of community-based programs and services. During 2016, BH managed $79.1 million in financial aid in-kind contributions through five wide-ranging programs: Guaranteeing Access to Care; Advancing Careers in Health Care; Promoting Health & Wellness; Building Stronger Neighborhoods; and Creating Healthier Communities. The core of our healthcare services is the hospital itself. For over 135 years, BH has not only served the medical needs of the community but also pioneered advances in medicine and trained thousands of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Today, as a member of Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) — which also includes Yale New Haven Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Westerly Hospital — BH is a distinguished institution whose more than 2,650 employees are dedicated to the healthcare needs of our community.
Community Benefits Report Summary
Guaranteeing Access to Care
BH provided free or discounted healthcare services to over 20,740 eligible people at a loss of $27.9 million, plus under-reimbursed services for 119,905 Medicaid beneficiaries at a loss of $33.1 million. BH also guarantees access to care by subsidizing clinical programs at a loss of $1.8 million.
Advancing Careers in Health Care
BH provided $15.5 million to a variety of healthcare education programs that train individuals to become medical professionals, from physicians and nurses to pharmacists and dietitians.
Promoting Health & Wellness
BH provided over $600,000 to local health education programs, support groups, health fairs and various community organizations that help make Bridgeport a healthier place to live and work.
Building Stronger Neighborhoods
BH provided over $30,000 in financial and in-kind donations to support affordable housing programs, child care, job training, economic development and other essential services.
Creating Healthier Communities
BH provided nearly $100,000 in funds and in-kind services to dozens of not-for-profit organizations unaffiliated with the hospital.
