“Kathy is a leader and a shining star who models all the qualities a nurse should possess,” said Vice President Performance & Risk Management Ryan O’Connell, MD, who presented the award on behalf of the hospital’s medical staff.

Quoting from Kathy’s nomination form, Dr. O’Connell continued, “She has unified and engaged her nursing staff. They have embraced patient-centered care and patient satisfaction scores have steadily risen.”

“Kathy has impressed us with her dedication, empathy and basic common sense,” added Associate Chairman of Psychiatry Neil Dolan, MD.

“Kathy always thinks about patients first—not just as patients but as people,” said Director of Psychiatry Patricia Rizzi.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch was a special guest at the May 4 award reception and read a proclamation declaring May 6–12 Bridgeport Hospital Nurses Week in the city.

“Behind the backbone of a hospital is its nursing staff,” Finch said. “We’re so lucky we have some of the best healthcare you can have anywhere.”

Representing the hospital’s senior management at the reception, Bridgeport Hospital Foundation President Steve Jakab told the nurse managers on hand, “You’re so important to our patients and staff for the wonderful leadership you provide. Our hospital is an accumulation of tens of thousands of acts of kindness and support—and you set the standard for that.”

“This job just keeps getting better every single year,” declared Senior Vice President Patient Care Operations & Chief Nursing Officer MaryEllen Hope Kosturko. “Our team gets stronger and stronger. Every task before you is completed in the best possible fashion.”
