Principal-for-a-Day Goes the Extra Mile

FAIRFIELD, CT – Paul Blanco, a student at the Unquowa School in Fairfield and the lucky winner of the school’s October Principal-for-a-Day drawing, has turned the opportunity to give his classmates a gift into a fundraiser for a special cause.

The Principal-for-a-Day gets to make one decision on behalf of his fellow classmates, and most students choose a dress-down day. Students at Unquowa are normally required to wear uniforms.

Paul took the idea one step further. After researching local charities, he asked students to make a 25 cent donation in order to participate in a “wear pink” dress-down day, with all proceeds benefitting The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center in Bridgeport and Fairfield. Paul raised a total of $1,000 with the majority of students participating. Sharon Lauer, headmaster at Unquowa, said she was extremely proud of Paul for taking his day to the next level.

“Many of the students on their way into school that day told me they were glad Paul had chosen breast cancer to support as their moms, grandmothers, aunts, etc. have been affected by the disease, or another family member had some other form of cancer.”

The money raised will go to The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center’s programs for underserved women.

“It means a lot to us when young people offer their help,” says Dr. Donna Twist, executive director of the Breast Care Center. “It’s not a subject they like to talk about, but they know how it feels when a loved one is ill and they want to help in the best way they can.”
