Breast Cancer Survivor Creates 'Mural of Hope' at Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center

FAIRFIELD, CT — Susan Murray, a breast cancer survivor and decorative artist, wanted to give something to women with breast cancer to inspire them on their journey. She created a beautiful mural that now hangs in the meditation room at The Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center.

“I was given so much hope at the Breast Care Center,” she says. “Being a patient there made all the difference. You walk into a living room-like setting and feel relaxed. You can call your doctor by her first name. They make you feel like you’ll get through this.”

The mural has a faux stone background overlaid with hand-painted flowers and messages of hope and strength. “It’s Rosa Travertine, a natural stone that is a symbol of strength,” Murray says. “And the rose is the symbol of the Breast Care Center.”

Visitors to a local Irish festival, where the mural was displayed, wrote the names of people they knew who had been touched by the disease as well as words of encouragement. “It’s very positive,” Murray says.

Murray is a partner in Finished with Style of Monroe, a firm that specializes in decorative painting and plastering. They create custom finishes on all surfaces (walls, floors and ceilings) in residential as well as commercial spaces throughout Connecticut and New York.

Murray worked on the mural for over a year, while she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. “It was a natural outlet for me,” she says. “It was a way I could give back.”
